The Gateway Bike Plan is the result of a cooperative effort between Great Rivers Greenway, East-West Gateway Council of Governments, City of St. Louis, the Counties of St. Louis and St. Charles, Metro (program of Bi-State Development), Trailnet and the Missouri Department of Transportation. 

The Plan

Bicycling can take on many different meanings for the residents of the greater St. Louis region. For children, those first tentative trips by bicycle provide a sense of adventure and are important steps towards independence. Others see bicycling as a way to exercise and stay fit, occasionally riding to work or school during nice weather. Still others rely on bicycles as a primary means of transportation—whether by choice, because they elect not to use a car, or because they cannot afford a car.

Similarly, some bicyclists are very comfortable riding in the road with motor vehicles, while others are more cautious and prefer riding on separate paths and trails. Another important group is those who currently don’t ride bicycles; but are interested in doing so in the future. Finally, there are residents who choose not to bicycle but understand that it is important to their fellow citizens to be able to use bicycles on the roadway for transportation.

Regardless of the underlying motivations or level of experience, the regional bicycle network must provide the bicycle accommodations and connections for a safe, high-quality experience for all people and skill levels. A viable transportation system provides a number of travel choices, including travel by bicycle. Similarly, the transportation system must afford travelers direct, efficient routes to reach their destinations, instead of requiring them to go out of their way to get from point A to point B.

Progress

The annual Gateway Bike Plan report card measures successes implementing new on-street bikeways, bicycle safety and skills training courses, professional development for area planners and engineers, and policy changes that support active transportation.

The materials in this Community Briefing Kit are intended to be shared via social media, incorporated into community newsletters and emails, and distributed to local residents and stakeholders to raise awareness for bicycling and the many benefits of a bikeable community. The presentation includes information about the Gateway Bike Plan, the benefits of bicycling, and basic bicycle facility types. These slides are intended to be tailored specifically to your project or audience, so please add new slides or subtract unneeded slides. GATEWAY BIKE PLAN NETWORK CHANGE REQUEST FORM

With more than 1,000 miles of recommended on-street bicycle facilities in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County, the Gateway Bike Plan provides a comprehensive and coordinated vision for accommodating and encouraging bicycling as a viable transportation mode in the region. As a “living” document, the Gateway Bike Plan will be periodically updated to catalog accomplishments, address new challenges and opportunities, and revise recommendations to ensure continued implementation success.

This change request form provides a formal channel through which area residents, local agencies and organizations, and other stakeholders can recommend changes to the Gateway Bike Plan Network outside of a formal, comprehensive update to the Plan. Submitted Network Change Request Forms will be reviewed by Great Rivers Greenway and voted on by the Gateway Bike Plan Working Group.
